The largest proportion of energy data centers consume is due to their huge cooling systems which run through the whole building. If a multi-story building is selected as a Microsoft company’s data center, it is made sure that the cooling system is pre-installed and is working fine.
To avoid any distasteful incident, enough amount of attention is paid to maintenance of these data centers.
As electrical equipment get heated up quickly and this heat can be disastrous, cooling systems are backbones of these centers.
IT equipment is prone to explosion and breakdown if they heat up, and data centers where a huge amount of precious data is saved definitely cannot afford this dwindling in temperature.
The extensive wiring used to connect computers with electricity and internet connection can catch fire if its temperature upsurges.
The swift changes in temperature will break the connection of your security system and it increases the chances of data breaching and stealing.
To make a data center thoroughly protected and maintain its smooth running, stable cooling system is a must-have.
There are two cooling system data centers opt for. The air-based cooling system is old and has its limitations, while the liquid cooling system is newer and is more advanced.
In an air-based cooling system, cold air is pumped inside the cabinets and racks of the data centers. This cold air replaces the heat being released by computers and other equipment. As a data center works 24/7, the air pump continuously works alongside.
However, if the systems’ temperature increases abruptly, this air cooling is not sufficient to cope with it. The reason the time it takes during the replacement process. Cold air takes time to occupy the space, and this limitation doesn’t prove it to be a stable cooling system.
The only stable cooling system, which is thoroughly reliable is the liquid based. Water runs directly throughout the data center and absorbs the emitted heat. Unlike the air-based system, water never allows a sudden rise or fall in the temperature.
Ideal temperature recommended for data centers is minimum 18C and maximum 27C. The liquid cooling system makes sure that the limit is never exceeded.
As high temperature increases chances of collapse and should be avoided at all costs, sudden fall in temperature also does the same destruction.
Drawbacks of not having a stable cooling system!
Various research studies have proved that 60% of electricity centers consume is because of the pre-installed hefty cooling systems. However, if the power supply is not stable and the temperature keeps altering, data centers will have to bear double the cost than normal.
Similarly, the huge (and confidential) data files lying in data centers can be destroyed if the center faces a sudden rise in temperature. Boom, it will be gone! No country, business/corporation or individual can bear the loss of data they have extracted and gathered with hard work.
The sensitive/confidential data (which mostly belongs to government institutes) should never be destroyed or exposed in any case. If the temperature is consistent, the chances of system cessation will decrease to the least level.
